AdSense Success Story # 1 – John Tulus
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is John Tulus. I was born in October of 1966 in Córdoba,
Argentina, South America.
As a child, I played with my first Commodore 64, developing small
and easy programs to defy my school friends. As I got used to
programming, I started to develop more complex programs, some of
them to help me solve math problems, others to store information,
and others just to play around.
My passion for computing started growing more and more, and as the
industry developed, I was amazed by the growing possibilities that
were becoming available. I later traded my Commodore for my first
real PC, an XT, and decided to dedicate my life to studying and
working with computers.
In University, I developed my ability as Systems Analyst and started
to read about the capabilities of interconnectivity between computers.
Networks started to become a standard and computers started
"talking" to each other. Then, one particular event grabbed my
attention: the ability to send information through computers to
distant places. The mere idea of thinking about all the possibilities
that this opened fascinated me. I started to see that the business of
the future was in what today is the INTERNET.
These events took me on the path I am today, working with the
Internet, and exploring its almost limitless possibilities. Today, at age
38, I live comfortably in this city I chose to live in. I travelled all over
the world, but I love my place and work from here.
4
How did you get started to make money on the Internet?
Once I graduated as Systems Analyst, I worked for several
companies in my country, developing software and different
applications, but I felt that I lacked something that was my own.
After having studied Marketing in the prestigious University of
Córdoba, and having obtained a Masters degree in that speciality, I
decided to quit my job to develop my personal project... I was sure
that I couldn´t fail. Once having acquired both the technical
knowledge and the marketing skills, I knew that I could combine both
and apply them to the Internet.
I started with small projects like web sites for friends. At first, many
of them weren´t aware of the possibilities. They saw the Internet as
just a passing fad, or something "hip", but once I convinced some of
them to create their web site, they started to understand the
potential that the Internet has to reach the whole world. After some
time of having their sites online, I received exclamations from them
like: "John, with the Internet you´ve hit it on the spot, how could we
not see this before?"
After some time of developing web sites for others, I knew it was
time to start to work on the ideas for developing my own site, my
own online company. I put all my ideas together, combined them
with the experience I had achieved developing web sites for others,
and put in motion the creation of my site. Once the site was up and
running, all I had to do was start generating traffic and wait for the
money to roll in. I remember the first cheque I received... what a
rush!! $29. That motivated me to keep on with the project of the life
that I desired.
Little by little, I learned about the commercial side of the Internet.
There was very little known at that point. Many web sites had failed,
some of them had become a huge success. So, I tried to learn from
others, what made one site successful and others not? How
could some web site owners earn millions, and others have huge
amounts of traffic, but not have a decent revenue? This and many
more questions were the ones that led me to investigate further and
further on how to convert an attractive site with traffic into a site that
would generate revenue.
The beginning was tough, it was mostly based on trial and error. We
were all learning as we went along. There was no sure formula for
5
success. So, reading, studying, comparing, making mistakes and
learning from them were the only tools we had to move along. Many
times I even thought that revenues were only for the megasites, like
Google or AOL. I was discouraged at several points, but thanks to my
faith in the Internet, and all the information available, I kept on
trying different alternatives. All the information for being successful
was right there, in the Internet itself, it was only a matter of finding it
and using it in the best way. So, I kept on trying and learning. The
eventual cheques I received started to increase little by little and
these would motivate me to keep on trying. At first, I couldn´t make
a decent living out of that, and had to rely on other small jobs to get
along. Eventually, the cheques started increasing enough as to be
able to dedicate my full time to the Internet. Now, I can´t complain...
we live very well with my family made up of my wife, two beautiful
kids and my faithful friend... my dog Bob.
When did you first decide that Google AdSense Program was
right for you?
As Google started to offer more than just search engine services, I
started to pay more attention to what it had to offer. In May of 2004
I started to work with Google´s Pay Per Click program, unfortunately
with quite bad results. Once again, it was a new concept, and I
wasn´t sure of its benefits. I even thought of abandoning the
Adsense Program at a certain point, thinking that it had just been
something that Google had been testing.
I decided to give it a better try and started to collect information. I
read an infinity of articles and notes, I studied in detail the FAQ of
Adsense. Many sites were appearing with Google Ads, so I supposed
that it was starting to catch on. Webmasters must probably be
finding benefits, so I started to work with Adsense in more detail.
Finally, in October of the same year I received my birthday present:
a $300 cheque from Google Adsense.
From that moment on, I realized that Adsense was the indicated PPC
program for me.
My personality does not let me stay still, so I started to work on what
would be my new project: TO INCREASE MY EARNINGS WITH
GOOGLE ADSENSE.
I read my many files again and revised the possible errors that I
could have been making. They were long days and long nights of
studying, I was motivated but exhausted. It kept my mind busy day
6
and night. I was trying to figure out how it could benefit me in
particular, how I could apply it and take full advantage of its benefits.
On the night of the 31st of December, during the moment of the New
Year´s celebration came the illumination... the secret of earning
much more money with Adsense.
I knew that web site traffic was essential, as well as content, but
Google surely had a way of identifying content based on keywords. I
discovered that some of my sites got better page rank and got paid
more per click on Google Ads. This meant that content and keywords
were surely ranked and paid accordingly. I started to investigate
which words paid more than others, comparing different sites
and through extensive research. Finally, there was no doubt
about it: there is a keyword rank, and Google pays according to the
importance of the content. So, success was based on keywords,
content and traffic. Combining these three factors would be essential
and thus I started to think of ways of presenting my sites in the form
that would benefit me most. This didn´t mean changing all my web
sites, but just presenting them in a better way, focused more on
content and keywords.
And so TopPayingWords.com was born: The Biggest and Best Top
Paying Keywords List. (actually with +150,000 keywords)
On the 1st of January of 2005 I was already working on my new
project.
With this site, I presented to other webmasters the most extensive
keyword list according to how Google ranks them. Knowing what
keywords pay more, and adding them to your content boosts
Adsense revenue, because now you are including words that get paid
more by Google.
I restructured my site, changed a few things from their place, and
added the top paying words related with quality content. The results
appeared imediately; my revenues were tremendously increased.
Do you prefer AdSense over Affiliate Programs promotion?
Yes, I prefer Google Adsense over any other affiliate program
because it has Google guarantee. Thousands of websites are now
applying Adsense to their sites. Not only do you have the Google
guarantee, but visitors to your web site may also see it as having the
Google "seal of confidence". In a certain way, having Adsense on
your site shows visitors that your site has been approved by Google.
7
Nevertheless, having Adsense on your site doesn´t mean that you
can´t have other affiliate programs combined with it. You can
actually have as many programs as you want, but I prefer Adsense
specially because the conversion rate to money is much faster with
Adsense.
No other affiliate program converts clicks to money as fast as Google
Adsense.
With Google Adsense I may need just 10 optimized clicks to earn
$20. By optimized, I mean clicks on a page that has keywords that
pay the most in Adsense. With other affiliate programs I need at least
200 visits to an optimized site with related content and optimized
traffic to earn the same amount of money.
As you can see, Google Adsense beats any other affiliate program by
far.
The only thing I would improve, though, is the user stats system.
Could you reveal your first 90 days AdSense earnings?
As I said before, the beginnings were difficult. There were days in
which I earned just $0.50, $1.62 and even $5, but as I got to know
the program more and combining the TopPayingWords.com with the
content, there were days that I made more than $200. More and
more I started to realize that keywords were essential to
increasing revenues. As I started understanding the use of
keywords and developed a keyword list rank, revenues started
increasing incredibly.
Traffic is essential to make money in this and the other PPC
programs. You can´t expect to make $5.000 a month with just 100
daily visits. Having you site well ranked and generating traffic is the
first step. The more traffic you have, the more possibilities you´ll
have of visitors clicking on your Google Ads.
The optimization of the web site is fundamental in all of this. The site
must be very well ranked in the most important search engines with
well chosen words in your content.
The Adword campaigns also help to obtain traffic. It´s very
important, before starting with any Adsense campaign, to see which
tools we have available. A good site, good content, traffic, the
8
TopPayingWords.com Database and a little bit of luck are the recipe
to be successful with this program. Today I can say that my objective
has been accomplished.
My own experience with Adsense was a learning curve, because it
was just the beginning. But now, Adsense has been applied by
thousands of websites and many webmasters are benefitting from it.
So, for those that want to start with Adsense on their sites, it is much
easier and they will be able to see immediate results if applying all
the right ingredients: traffic, content and keywords.
What big mistakes do you see others make with AdSense and
how they can be avoided?
#1 - Not using Channels
I didn´t make this Adsense error but if you aren't using Adsense
Channels you are losing money and don´t have a way of tracking
your development. If you don't believe me, set up at least URL
channels for your pages and you'll see in real time what works and
what does not.
#2 - Using the horizontal format
So far, the results are much better when people use the vertical
format.
#3 - Placing Adsense Ad Units on the top, bottom, right and
left of content
The Adsense publisher community may not totally agree, but don't
hide your ads by neatly stuffing them on the borders of your site.
Put your Adsense Ad Unit in the middle where your visitor will be
forced to see them. It's not that your visitor doesn't want to see the
ads it's that over the years of web surfing we've become blind to
traditional banner locations.
#4 - Adding your sites to the filter out list
One Webmaster thought that the way to let Google know that you
wanted to add additional sites to your AdSense account was to list
the URLs under the Advanced options tab. In reality, this tab is used
9
to list the sites you want to filter out (i.e., not display AdWords) on
your site. Google automatically knows what pages you want to
include under your AdSense account when you add the code to the
pages.
So, you can add any site you own without additional paperwork.
#5 - Not testing.
Because of the limited information Google currently supplies, this can
be difficult. Nonetheless, you want to see what works and what
doesn’t on your site. Experiment.
#6 - Applying too early.
If you don’t have at least 20 good content pages and some traffic,
you’ll most likely be rejected.
Not applying because you believe 'this isn’t for me'.
Sure, there are situations where using AdSense doesn’t make sense.
However, we believe that AdSense will benefit many people who
currently have decided the program isn’t for them.
For example, we’ve heard from a number of professionals who feel
that having AdWords on their sites will ‘taint their image.’ That’s
possible, we suppose. However, we believe that for most
professionals, the added credibility gained by having ‘Ads by Google’
on your site (and the correct assumption by visitors that Google has
therefore checked you out at least a little), more than compensates
for this potential downside.
Could you reveal some of your AdSense Web Sites and explain
how you've come up with the ideas to develop them?
http://www.TopPayingWords.com
Once I discovered that Google payed according to content and
keywords, and after thorough research on the subject, I devised a list
of keywords that paid the most. I applied these keywords to my own
sites, and was amazed on how my revenues from Google increased
dramatically. Now, the biggest part of my revenues are thanks to
Google Adsense.
10
Through TopPayingWords.com, webmasters have access to the
biggest keyword database on the Internet, ranked according to those
that pay the most in Adsense. With just applying these keyowrds to
their sites, webmasters increase their Adsense revenues immediately.

http://www.wmxp.com
In this site, I offer all types of services for webmasters. The idea for
this site appeared when I first started working as webmaster. There
were many things I needed to do for my sites and discovered that I
had to develop tools for them. So, eventually, I thought that it would
be good to have a one-stop site where you could find everything that
a webmaster needs for his website. That is how wmxp.com was
created. Its intention is to provide all webmasters with everything
they need to make their work easier. Something I wish I had had
when I first started working as a webmaster.

How do you go about optimizing your site for Google
and other Search Engines?
The optimization of a site is a fundamental aspect to make it
successful. Search engines are great collaborators to reach the
desired objective for anybody that has a site on the Internet, that is:
TRAFFIC, the magic word.
I study my website stats every day, improve the meta keywords
based on this analysis, and the distribution of images on the site.
You must also be well informed on how the indexing of pages change
in search engines, due to the fact that understanding this will make
your task of being in the top ten easier.
How do you go about converting your Site traffic into more
Adsense Income?
Through traffic analysis to our site we improve the CTR ( click
through rate ) and since we added the TopPayingWords.com
database we increased the amount of money per click.
If you are already running Adsense on your site, you are probably
thinking of ways to increase your Adsense income.
If your Adsense is performing poorly, I have 3 (three) Tips for you:
1. Decrease the number of Adsense blocks that you are displaying on
a page. I don't know how others have experienced this, but my
income seemed to be less if I had more than one block of Adsense
ads displayed at once – and your CTR is definitely less if you have
more than one ad impression at a time.
My suggestion would be to have one Adsense block in your content,
and an Adlinks block somewhere at the top of your page. Adlinks is
great because if someone clicks on a link in it, they are taken to a
page with many more choices on it, which increases your chances of
them clicking through.
2. Change your link colour to blue. While I cannot disclose my CTR I
can tell you that this one little change more than doubled my
CTR. I know that there are others out there who advocate that your
16
link colour should be the same as the other links on your site, but try
it out for yourself for a day or two. I think you will be highly
surprised!
3. Set the URL colour to the same colour as the ad's text. This makes
the URL ''melt" in and makes the link colour stand out more,
definitely making it more "clickable".
The above three changes definitely resulted in doubling my own
Adsense income. Experiment with it and see how it works for you.
Could you share some profit-pulling TIPS our readers can
instantly use to maximize their AdSense Income (24 hours)?
To be able to increase your earnings through Adsense, it's very
important to have a site with good content, good traffic, and as said
before, combine it with the TopPayingWords.com database.
You also have to place the Adsense ads in the places where the
navigator will most probably click on.
Google advises on how to place them at the following link:
